Country: Afghanistan, Pakistan

From January to 27th July a total of 53,410 undocumented Afghans spontaneously returned or deported from Pakistan through Turkham and Spin Boldak borders of Nangarhar and Kandahar provinces (source: Directorates of Refugees and Repatriation). Out of this 37,926 are spontaneous returnees in family groups and 15,491 are deported individuals. The spontaneous return of the undocumented Afghans spiked in the second week of July and still continues, from 1st to 10th of July the average return of the families were 5 families/day however from 11th up to 27th of July, it suddenly increased to 160 families/day as average.

Operating only in Turkham during the above mentioned period of time, IOM was able to provide post-arrival humanitarian assistance to only 35% of the undocumented Afghans. If we look into the ratio of assistance against the overall return and deportation only in July, it is only 18% and both the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation (MoRR) and Directorate of Refugees and Repatriation (DoRR) of Nangarhar have requested IOM to increase its level of assistance for vulnerable undocumented Afghan families and deportees. According to the DoRR Nangarhar, among the overall returnees about 30—40% are vulnerable and in need of humanitarian assistance.
